In the management of atherosclerosis statins have already surpassed all other classes of medicines. Benefit rewarding from statins use is even higher than those from betablockers, inhibitors of angiotensin converting enzyme or antithrombotic drugs. No surprise that statins were dubbed as early as at the end of the last century „miracle“ drugs. It was shown that not all the positive results of statins should be explained only by atherogenic lipid lowering due to fact that benefit was observed also in the group of patients with „normal“ lipid profile. There are a lot of evidence about others, non-lipid lowering effects of statins named like pleiotropic or non-lipid modifiable ones. The most important pleiotropic effects of statins are influence on endothelial function, antiinflammatory, antithrombotic and antiproliferative ones. There are differences among statins not only in the severity of hypolipidemic action but also in these pleiotropic effects.
