Haematopoietic stem cells (SC) have been used for more than 30 years for transplantation in haematology and oncohaematology. The most common indications are acute and chronic leukemias, lymphomas and plasmocytoma. SC transplantation (SCT) is indicated also in non-malignant haematological diseases as aplastic anaemia and inherited haematological disorders as well as in other inborn errors. Transplantation of SC is important also in oncology. In recent years SCT is indicated also in autoimmune diseases as sclerosis multiplex and rheumatoid arthritis. The most recent application is in the substitution of non-haematopoietic stem cells, as e.g. mesenchymal cells in endothelium of vessels. SC’s are therefore important also in cardiology, angiology and osteology.
