Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are problem class of diseases in term of diagnosis and therapy. There are two important ethiopathogenetic factors: motoric and sensoric dysfunction. The important role plays serotonin (5-HT), that is substantial agent in gastrointestinal physiologie. 5-HT have two main functions, it is an enteric neurotransmitter and a mucosal signalling molecule. Pharmacological affection of specific seretonin receptors present perspective resources in the treatment of FGID. The most significant are 5-HT3 receptor antagonists and 5-HT4 receptor agonists. 5-HT3 antagonists reduce abdominal pain and discomfort, retard intestinal transit, accelerate colonic resorption of water, and have antiemetic properties. 5-HT4 receptor agonists accelerate intestinal transit and have prokinetic effects in upper and lower gastrointestinal tract.
