We live in the time of globalisation.People have bad eating habbits, they live more comfortale life with less physical activities. The occurance of cardiovascular diseases increases though there are some differences among European countries related to different eating habbits and behavioural characteristics The main risk factors in Slovakia are hypertension, dyslipoproteinaemia and smoking. Controlled clinical studies have confirmed the key role of LDL cholesterol in etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Lowering of LDL cholesterol level in hypertension therapy has brought significantly higher cardiovascular benefit. These findings lead in 2004 to the revision of guidelines of LDL cholesterol levels in the program NCEP ATP III in high risk patients to < 1,8 mmol/l. To reach a new target LDL cholesterol level is virtually impossible without striking change of diet and eating habbits in general. A very simple program of way of life and eating habbits change has been proposed by European Heart Network, however, a new legislature is needed for its realisation in our country. Attitude to healthy food is implemented to general human rights decôaration, the fact, which we have to remember.
