Liver biopsy is a standard examination in diagnostic process of hepatic diseases. It is particularly necessary for assessment of grading and staging of chronic hepatitis. Although many histological scoring systems have been proposed, numerical scoring of liver biopsies will continue to have a place in the context of clinical trials. The Ishak score is used in many medical centers. According to this system, the degree of necroinflammatory activity is assessed as minimal (1 - 3 points), mild (4 - 8 points), moderate (9 - 12 points) and severe (13 - 18 points) and the degree of fibrosis is similary assessed (1 - 6 points). The authors of article present a basic informations about history and application of scoring systems at present and describe their advantages and disadvantages. The note, that semiquantitative histological scoring is particularly helpful in clinical studies and research on chronic hepatitis and is less relevant in routine clinical practice. Traditional descriptive reports should remain the basic part of routine histomorphological examination.
