Ageing is accompanied by changes affecting respond of organism to medicaments. These differences afflict not only pharmacokinetics, but also pharmacodynamics of the drug. Polymorbidity of geriatric patients results in taking more drugs. The higher the number of medicaments, the higher the risk of adverse effects and drug interactions. Adverse effects in elderly patients are often manifested atypically - falls, disturbances of consciousness, excessive sedation, constipation, urine retention or general thrivelessness. Specific problem of the elderly patient is his compliance that is affected by his/her socioeconomic situation. The article reviews specific problems of pharmacotherapy of geriatric patients and some solutions and recommendations including conception of medicaments potentionally inappropriate for the elderly patient.
