Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a disease with the incidence increasing with age. The selection of oral antidiabetic drugs depends upon presence of the symptoms of insulin resistance, metabolic compensation, concomitant diseases, patient state and age. In case of elderly patients, sulfonylurea derivatives are the most frequently used antidiabetic medications. Differences in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters of individual preparations allow the choice of the suitable drug for a particular diabetic patient with the achievement of maximum efficiency and simultaneously minimal side effects. This article is an overview of characteristics of the sulfonylurea derivatives used to treat type 2 diabetic patients in the clinical praxis.
