Diabetes mellitus is disease with worldwide increasing prevalence. It is predicted that in 2025 will be 333 milion of diabetics around the world. In 2003 were in Europe 48,4 milion diabetics and in Slovakia 287 304 diabetics were treated. 90 % of these people were diabetics type 2. More than 50 % of diabetics already had evidence of microvascular and macrovascular complications at time of diagnosis. Despite better treatment procedures, our knowledge about importance of intensive glycaemic control, over 60 % diabetics are not reaching recommended glycaemic control. The main goal of the Global Partnership for Effective Diabetes Management with programme Control To Goal is to help healthcare providers and their patients by ten practical steps to achieve recommended treatment objectives.
