Acute stroke is the most common neurological disorder with estimated high incidence, prevalence and mortality. Stroke management requires interdisciplinary co-operation with the goal immediately recognize stroke, manage urgent transport to the regional hospital and organize emergent diagnosis and therapy. Computerized tomography (native CT scan) represents the key diagnostic method with the ability to distinguish between ischemic stroke, subarachnoid and cerebral hemorrhage. The best therapy for ischemic strokes is emergent therapeutic recanalization by the standard use of intravenous rt-PA thrombolysis. It has been established that prevention and acute therapy in intensive cerebral units (stroke units) is more effective and not as expensive as are the costs for subsequent care of handicapped patients.
