Project Nemesys represents cross-sectional multicentric screening of metabolic syndrome in 10 300 consecutive out-patients of 54 general practitoners in whole territory of Slovakia. Project has showed 25.6 % prevalence of metabolic syndrome in given patients. Prevalence of abdominal obesity was extremely high in whole group reaching 65.9 % with significant preponderance in females as compared to males 72.6 % vs. 56.6 % (p < 0.001). Individual components of metabolic syndrome had also high prevalence and they were unsatisfactorily controlled - arterial hypertension was controlled only in 9.1 % of patients, triacylglycerols were uncontrolled in one third of patients. Project Nemesys revealed high prevalence of metabolic syndrome as population risk factor threatening by further increase of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity
