In the project „Prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Slovakia“ 1 517 respondents were analyzed with corresponding structure of adult population according to age, sex and regions. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) according to NCEP/ATP III criteria was 20.1 %. It was significantly higher in females (23.9 %) compared with males (15.9 %, p < 0.0001). With more strict IDF criteria involved the prevalence of MS was increased totally to 38.1 %, without significant differences between females (36.6 %) and males (39.7 %, p = 0.213). We confirmed 7.0 % prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), including 5.3 % of known DM, 1.2 % of new DM according to ADA criteria and 0.5 % of additional new cases of DM after oGTT in respondents with impaired fasting glucose. Prevalence of MS and its components in Slovakia is comparable with prevalence in European population in other countries, with the exception of prevalence of low HDL (56 % totally, 45 % in males and 66 % in females), which is one of the highest in Europe.
