Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the most common cause of deaths of men and women in the European Union. In the etiology, ischemic heart disease, ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke and consequences of arterial hypertension predominate. In women, the risk of CVD increases with the onset of menopause. Early detection of risk factors and their treatment are basic preventive steps to reduce morbidity and mortality on CVD. The SCORE for premenopausal women is determined, and then the presence of metabolic syndrome is concerned with arranging their way of living, or with the pharmacological intervention. Low-dose hormone substitute therapy is also the part of medical care for women at the age of menopause, but its application has to be indicated accurately and monitored regularly.
