Endocanaboid system is a new endogenous physiological system that plays a role in body weight regulation, metabolism of lipids and glucose regulation and energy balance maintenance. It is composed of two receptors called canaboid receptor type 1 and 2 (CB 1 and CB2) and of two endogenous ligand - endocabnaboids derived from arachidon acid (2-arachidonyl glycerol and anandamid ). Canabinoid receptors are present in the CNS (hypotalamus and mezolimbic system), in peripheral organs (visceral and subcutaneous fatty tissue, lever, skeletal muscles, gastrointestinal tract and pancreas) and in the immune system. In fasting the endocanaboid system gets activated and increases appetite. After eating its activity decreases. The system is hyperactive in the obese. Reducing hyperactivity of endocanaboid system by selective blockers can affect the major cause of cardio metabolic risk factors.
