(PVT) is a disorder with a variable clinical presentation and a relatively benign course, depending on the underlying cause of thrombosis. Both systemic (thrombophilic) and local (hepato-biliary) factors have been associated with PVT. In diagnostics we use duplex/color Doppler ultrasonography, computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (including CR- and MRI-angiography). The management of patients with PVT is based on two main principles: 1. prevention of further thrombosis and attemps at recanalization and 2. the treatment of complications associated with portal hypertension. The main treatment options for PVT are: anticoagulation, chirurgic shunt, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding.
