Vegetarian diet is high in fiber, some vitamins, antioxidants, phytoestrogens and low in saturated fat that may be consistent with good health. On the other hand, especially strict vegetarians, who do not take food of animal origin including milk and eggs, suffer very often from nutrient shortage like B family vitamins. In elderly people, the volume of food intake decreases with an increasing age and the deficiency of some nutrients decreases therefore even more, too. Insufficient nutrition represents one of the important and susceptive factors for formation and development of osteoporosis. In this article we tried to explain the significance of certain vitamins for bone metabolism as well as for the risk of osteoporosis formation and osteoporotic fractures in relationship to vegetarian way of nutrition.
