In the overview article the authors paid attention to pathophysiology of acute water poisoning and its causes (accidental, inadequate treatment procedures and suicides). They presented subjective symptoms, objective clinical and laboratory signs, they paid large attention to differential diagnostics with other clinical conditions, at which signs and symptoms might be partially similar to those at water poisoning. In water poisoning treatment they recommended restriction of liquids, use of diuretics namely furosemide, or use of tolvaptan, a blocker of inadequate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, but also treatment of possible underlying disease, during which water poisoning arose. Finally they draw attention to prognosis of acute water poisoning, which if not treated might be fatal. Success depends on early intensive treatment.
