Anemia of chronic diseases (ACD) or anemia of chronic inflammation is the second most frequent anemia (the commonest
form is anemia of iron deficiency). ACD is associated with systemic diseases including inflammatory conditions
as chronic infections, autoimmune diseases and malignancies. It occurs mainly in older patients. The major role in
the etiopathology play various immune and inflammatory mechanisms that interfere with the production of erytropoetin
and iron metabolism. Clinically is ACD manifested as mild to moderate normocytic anemia. The diagnosis is often
determined per exclusionem. The most course of treatment is effective control or removal of the underlying conditon.
Therapeutic erythropoetin can correct anemia, sometimes with addition of iron, in severe cases transfusion therapy.
