Antimicrobial resistance of clinically Important bacteria especially the spread of multi-resistant gram-negative bacteria
(MRO – GNB) has acquired pandemic character. Burden of multidrug-resistant organisms in a population are becoming
increasingly common and antibiotic treatment becomes more challenging. Detection of carbapenemases in enterobacteriaceae
may cause resistance to all beta-lactam antibiotics and the result is the resistance virtually all clinically usable
antibiotics, know as pandrug – resistance.
This is a very dangerous phenomenon and this clinically as well as epidemiologically.
All these facts require more stringent antibiotic policy hospitals and the introduction of effective prevention measures
in preventing the spread of MRO – GNB especially their early identification, active screening and adoption of anti – epidemic
measures.
