Hirsutism is a clinical symptom of hyperandrogenic state which markedly negatively influences quality of life in women
of reproductive age. The most common cause of hirsutism is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), rare causes include idiopathic
hyperandrogenism, idiopathic hirsutism, non classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia, HAIR AN syndrome etc.
Diagnosis of hirsutism is made by physical examination using scoring systems and confirmation of PCOS or other rare
causes of hyperandrogenic state. Treatment includes life style modification, local cosmetic techniques and pharmacological
therapy. Oral contraceptives with neutral or antiandrogenic gestagens represent the first line pharmacological
treatment. If oral contraceptives are not effective, antiandrogens are indicated.
