Doping occurs in both professional and recreational sport, in different age groups and at a local, European and global
level. It can have a serious impact on health, in some cases with permanent or even fatal consequences. The most commonly
abused substances include anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) applied in doses that greatly exceed the pharmacologically
recommended doses, which are combined with other performance-enhancing substances. Hormonal homeostasis
is disrupted, a disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis function occurs, and there are adverse
effects on the cardiovascular system, hematopoiesis, gastrointestinal system and musculoskeletal system, psychiatric
side effects, etc. Further research is needed into AAS detection, and the monitoring and treatment of the immediate
and long-term adverse effects of AAS.
