Regarding its main action in the regulation of water-salt balance and blood pressure the mineralocorticoid hormone aldosterone
was studied for a long time, mainly when related to cardiovascular diseases. However, we found interesting
the action of aldosterone, to which almost no attention was paid. I.e. Its possible participation in pathophysiology of
psychological disorders. The results of the research in preclinical models showed a causal relation between aldosterone
and anxious behaviour, as well as aldosterone and behaviour similar to depression. We showed that aldosterone is a
vital stress hormone in the period of ontogenesis. Our clinical research in patients with depressive disorder points out
to the significant role of aldosterone in the context of the length and severity of a depressive episode.
