Prevention of spread and control of multi-resistant bacteria s in health-care settings are critical and urgent as the number
of antibiotics available to treat these infections is extremely limited and development of new antibiotics is not
forthcoming in the foreseeable future. Hand hygiene, using alcohol hand disinfection in five moments, before touching
the patient, after touching the patient, after contact with the patient environment, before aseptic procedure, after exposure
to risk body fluids, is considered to be the most effective prevention of hospital infections and spreading multi-
resistant bacteria. Worldwide research shows that by improving this simple area, a reduction in the burden of healthcare
associated infections would be achieved by up to 50%. The compliance of hand hygiene with healthcare workers
is despite these findings very low and typically achieves less than 40%.
