Progress in cardiology, cardiac surgery and intensive care, reduce the mortality and morbidity of children with cardiac disorders. However, changed hemodynamic state and performance of surgical procedures are some of many factors that lead to a real risk of thromboembolism in children. The need of anticagulation prophylaxis and antithrombotic therapy is therefore becoming very actual. Lack of studies relating directly to pediatric patients lead to usage of anticoagulation methodologies defined for adults. This article reviews specifics of hemostasis and anticoagulation therapy in children. In the second part, the most common drugs used in antithrombotic therapy are defined. At the end, specific pediatric disease states are mentioned.
