The article presents results of analysis of prevalence of bacterial meningitis in Slovakia in the period of 1997-2007. The portion of particular origin of infection in two monitored periods – 1997-2001 and 2002-2007 was compared. From the whole number of 2067 reported bacterial meningitis Haemophilus influenzae accounted for 134 cases (6.5 %), Streptococcus pneumoniae for 269 (13.0 %), Neisseria meningitidis for 545 (26.4 %), other origin for 262 cases (12.7 %) and culture negative for 857 cases (41.5 %). In 4-year-old children 687 cases, 33.2 %, was reported and in other age groups 1380 cases, i.e. 66.8 %. Reported morbidity of meningitis in the period of 1997-2007 was from 2.62 in 2004 to 4.86/100 000 population in 1997. The highest age specific morbidity was in the group of 0-4-year-old children. Mortality in 0-4-year-old children accounts for 69.8 %.
