The movements of chest cage play fundamental role in respiration. Congenital and acquired deformities of chest wall can significantly influence the functions of respiratory system. Pectus excavatum presents the frequent case of restrictive lung function. There is not unique opinion how surgical correction can change the pulmonary functions. Some recent studies confirmed the significant improvement. Despite the results of published studies, patients considered the effect of surgical correction as positive and they noticed the improvement or even disappearance of the symptoms. Psychological impact of chest wall deformity presents an important indication for corrective surgery.
