The authors focus on significant risk factors of cardiovascular diseases referring to their interaction in childhood. They point at the importance of general screening of cholesterol where not only children with high levels of cholesterol might be caught by also those with combination of risk factors of atherosclerosis as obesity. The authors describe high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, cardiomyopathy of the obese and diastolic dysfunction, as well as vascular changes and thickness of intima-media of carotic vessels. On basis of analysis of these factors they refer to effective changes in prevention where new guidelines emphasize not only the fight against higher level of lipids in children but also the maintenance of physiological weight in children and prevention of insulin resistance development. Prevention of overweight and obesity in children with provision of adequate energy intake and sufficient physical activity, the prevalence of other risk factors of early atherosclerosis might be lowered. Management of children with risk of cardiovascular diseases should inevitably involve active screening of children obesity, diagnostic criteria, possibilities of appropriate treatment and secondary prevention.
