Rotaviral gastroenteritis (RVGE) is the most common cause of hospitalizations for gastroenteritis in children. Rotaviral infection is a leading cause of severe diarrhoea in children most commonly observed in the first 2 years of life. Rotaviral infection is a serious problem in both developed and undeveloped countries affecting nearly all children by the age of 5 years. Specific diagnosis is costly, doesn’t affect treatment, laboratory tests are not generally performed, that’s why the disease is underdiagnosed. No specific antiviral therapy is currently available and treatment is only supportive. The only effective intervention is vaccination. Current available vaccines (RotaTeq® Merck Sharp Dohme, Rotarix® GlaxoSmith-Kline) are effective mainly for reducing severe outcome of disease. Epidemics of RVGE in newborns during hospitalisation in department of neonatology is referred.
