Lactose intolerance is an unwanted food reaction characterized by a group of gastrointestinal symptoms. The ground of this reaction is deficit in lactase enzyme caused by variable causes, which leads to inability to digest lactose, the main carbohydrate in milk. In infants and toddlers this deficit arises mainly from secondary causes. This work presents a complex view of the issue of lactose intolerance in pediatric patients form clinical perspective. Lactose intolerance is elaborated in various aspects: history, prevalence, clinical picture, ethiopathogenesis of development of clinical symptoms in part I. Differential diagnostics, current possibilities in diagnostics and treatment are presented in part II.
