Liver steatosis in children and adolescents is developed without coincidental impact of alcohol and it is also known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It constitutes a very serious and more and more expanded health complication of pediatric patients and it affects 2,6 % of children population, from that 22,5 to 52,8 % of obese children. Liver steatosis is mostly associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, but it can be also caused by hereditary metabolic diseases, lipodystrophic syndromes, malnutrition, use of some medicaments, infections etc. Typically, it occurs at pre-school age or at the age of 10 – 14 years, mainly in obese or overweight children. Major part of causes is asymptomatic. Diagnosis is based on the elevation of aminotransferase activity, ultrasonography and liver biopsy are convenient, too. Weight loss presents the most effective therapy that leads to arrangement of clinical findings, but first of all, prevention and propriate life-style is very important, as well as timeous detection of reversible liver changes in patients with predispositions to development of liver injuries.
