Adenoids (hyperplastic pharyngeal tonsil) are common in pre-school children. The most common symptoms are caused by obstruction and inflammation of nasal cavity and sinuses, ear disorders, diseases of the lower respiratory tract or appear as focal infection. Adenoidectomy – removal of pathologically enlarged lymphoepithelial tissue of nasopharynx is currently the most common surgery among children. Adenoids as part of Waldeyer’s lymphatic ring represent a part of mucosal immunity and play an important role in the development of immunological memory in children. Although the immune activity of a chronically enlarged adenoid tissue is very low, indications for adenoidectomy particularly in young children have to be considered.
