Impact of oral cavity microbiome on human health and options for its favourable influence with probiotics
Oral health has a direct and indirect impact on overall health of an organism. A chronic oral infection is a permanent
potential source of infections and is considered an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular
diseases, diseases of peripheral arteries, airways and low birth weight. Relation between oral cavity
diseases in childhood and obesity was repeatedly proved in studies of a potential relation between cause and
outcome. Besides this, carious dentition influences child growth and development particularly negatively and it
may seriously jeopardise their health. To treat some pathological conditions in the oral cavity a probiotic approach
might be used. However, also data which we already have allow us to use scientifically proved probiotic effects
of particular types in the practice. So the conception was suggested to support oral cavity health as a supportive
way for systemic health. It is inevitable that general practitioners and dentists will take this new knowledge into
consideration and use it in practice.
