Benign and malignant tumors are very rare in the neonatal period. There are some differences between histological types
and biological behavior of tumors in newborn and older children. Most common are teratomas, neuroblastomas, leukemias
and soft tissue tumors. Diagnostic improved using prenatal and postnatal ultrasound examination. More precise
imaging can be prenatal reached by magnetic resonance and postnatal also by computer tomography. According
to the diagnosis, treatment is surgical, chemotherapy with drug doses calculated according to body weight and the age
of child and supportive treatment. “Watch and wait” strategy can be used for tumors with a known tendency to regression.
Important is care in specialized centers and collaboration of specialists caring for the child. In the past, mortality
was high in newborns with malignancy. The prognosis has improved with advances in neonatology and intensive care,
in pediatric oncology and surgery.
