Introduction: Obesity in childhood is becoming a world-wide epidemiological problem of the 21st century. Obesity in children has a tendency to persist also in adulthood, which leads to the origination of cardiovascular changes due to obesity including diabetes mellitus, symptoms of which can be observed already in young people. Aim To detect origination of obesity and overweight and evaluate its relation to other risk factors of cardiovascular (CVS) diseases in secondary school students in Košice.
Methods: We gained data from adolescents of 7 secondary schools with the seat in Košice. The group was created by 224 students with the average age 18 (121 girls and 104 boys). In each respondent we evaluated anthropometric parameters and examined chosen biochemical serum parameters.
Results: Incidence of obesity and overweight in the observed group of healthy adolescents from Košice secondary schools was 23.66 %, 19.83 % girls and 28.84 % boys were overweight or obese.
Conclusion: The present condition of continually increasing number of adolescents with the overweight and obesity also in Eastern Slovakia presents quite a serious health problem, which has a tendency to graduate, continually it also becomes a serious and social-economic problem of the whole society, when we realise, that at present almost each third secondary student suffers from obesity or overweight.
