Background: Despite advances in neonatology, pneumonia significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality in the
neonatal period. The aim of the, work was to compare the incidence of the types of pneumonia, incidence of pneumonia
according to gestational age, to evaluate the etiology of the disease.
Patients and methods: By retrospective analysis of medical records, we created a group of newborns with pneumonia
who were hospitalized at the JRSN of the neonatal department of FNsP in Žilina, from June 2012 to June 2017.
We recorded gestational age, birth weight, onset of pneumonia, etiological agent and the need for ventilation support.
Results and discussion: In the period of 5 years, were hospitalized 135 patients who met diagnostic criteria for pneumonia.
A higher incidence of pneumonia was found in a group of premature neonates (68%). Premature pneumonia
(86%) prevailed throughout the set. The ventilation support required 67% of the patients. Etiological agents were
demonstrated in 9% of patients. Newborns with pneumonia accounted for 22% of all hospitalized patients.
Conclusion: The work gave us a picture about the incidence of pneumonia in newborns. Confirmed the issue of microbiological
diagnostics as well as the importance and complications of ventilation support as part of the patient’s management.
