Allergic diseases are considered to be the epidemic of this century. It is reported that more than one third of the European
population suffers from some form of allergy and its occurrence continues to rise rapidly. The management
of treatment generally consists of three main strategies – pharmacotherapy to control symptoms of allergic diseases,
specific allergen immunotherapy and regimens to eliminate contact with allergens. Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is
currently the only causal treatment of allergic diseases and when rightly indicated, it provides chance for a significant
improvement of quality of life with gradual minimization of allergy symptoms and potential reduction of classical pharmacotherapy.
The AIT has been known over a century now. The advantage of the childhood age is the frequent monosensitization
of the patient, where AIT is much more effective. When treating children, we prefer tablet and drop form
of specific allergen immunotherapy, but subcutaneous form of AIT is also possible.
