Delivery before the 37th completed week of gestation occurs in less than 10% of pregnancies but accounts for more than 60% of all neonatal deaths. Approximately one third of pre-term deliveries is associated with premature rupture of the membranes. Survival of pre-term infants depends on the gestation at delivery and birth weight, as well as on the standard of neonatal care. Pre-term delivery complicated by intrauterine infection may be associated with a higher perinatal mortality. Management of pre-term delivery depends on the week of the gestation, and other factors. The crucial moment is evidence or absence of the intra-amniotic infection. Office care is important for prevention, treatment, management of the pregnancy as well as for delivery outcome.
