Preeclampsia, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome in pregnancy are associated with increased risk of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. Pathophysiology of complications in a neonate is closely connected with placental changes, which predispose to fetal growth retardation and hypoxic insults. Neonates of women with hypertension are at risk especially if proteinuria is present in pregnancy. The most common complication in neonates is RDS due to prematurity. There is no increase in rate of cerebral palsy of neonates who were born to mothers with preeclampsia, but those born before 32nd week of gestation have an increased risk of poor cognitive outcome. Delivery of pregnant women to perinatal center with neonatal intensive care unite can give better chance for survival and neurodevelopmental outcome of their newborn babies.
