Urinary incontinence represents a serious medical, social, hygienic and economic problem, which has not been satisfactorily resolved yet. In accordance with ICS guidelines we considered the definition, prevalence, classification, symptomatology, aetiopathogenesis and diagnostic relevance of examination methods in female urinary incontinence. Due to various reasons diagnostics as well as therapy of incontinence is still insufficient in Slovakia. It is not considered as a priority of gynaecology and obstetrics and is not appreciated professionally, institutionally and socially. It will be necessary to work up an algorithm for investigation and management of incontinent women following ICS guidelines for specific needs in Slovakia and achieve a social and professional recognition adequate to its importance.
