Overactive bladder is a symptom syndrome including urgency with or without urgent incontinence, usually accompanied by frequencies (urination more than 8 times per day) and nycturia (urination more than 2 times at night) without the presence of infection or other pathology. Because of high prevalence of overactive bladder this problem must be solved by each outpatient/clinical gynaecologist. The basic examinations include urinalysis, it is necessary to eliminate infections; in case of repeated haematuria it is necessary to implement urological examination including cystoscopy. The first choice of an overactive bladder therapy is first-line muscarinic receptor antagonists. The article describes principles of diagnosis and basic treatment feasible in every gynaecological clinic. In case of therapy failure the patient should be sent to a specialized examination.
