Surgical mesh is a medical device used to repair weakened or damaged tissue. It is made from porous absorbable synthetic material. In urogynaecological procedures, surgical mesh is permanently implanted to reinforce a weakened vaginal wall to repair pelvic organ prolapse or to support the urethra to treat urinary incontinence. The most frequent complications with surgical mesh devices for pelvic organ prolapse include mesh erosion, pain, infection, bleeding, dyspareunia, organ perforations, recurrent prolapse and emotional problems. Health care providers must obtain specialized training for each mesh, be vigilant for potential adverse event, watch for complications and inform patients about the complications and their effect on quality of life.
