Ultrasound is advancing constantly technically. It is a commonly available, non-invasive, and inexpensive imaging method that can be carried out without any risk or discomfort to the patient. Recent studies have shown that ultrasound and magnetic resonance yield similar levels of accuracy in the detection and assessment of local staging of gynaecological cancer. Fewer studies have been conducted to prove the role of transabdominal ultrasound in staging of advanced tumours, but their results have been promising. Therefore, ultrasound has the potential to be not only the most important imaging method for the detection of gynaecological tumours, but also to evaluate their extent in the pelvis and abdomen.
