The aim of this study is to evaluate the early and long-term morbidity of very low birth weight infants and its comparison
with foreign databases. This analysis shows that the major problem is still a high incidence of early (EOS) and late
onset of sepsis (LOS) in the birth weight group ≤ 1000 g (EOS 11.5 %, LOS 38.8 %) as well as in the birth weight group
1 001-1 500 g (EOS 10.2 %; LOS 10.8 %). Based on the analysis, authors see most significant differences in long-term
morbidity (cerebral palsy ‒ CP, psychomotor retardation ‒ PMR) not only in children with birth weight ≤ 1 000 g but
in newborns with birth weight 1 001-1 500 g as well. In Slovakia the incidence of cerebral palsy in surviving infants weighing
≤ 1 000 g achieved 9.3 % comparing to 7 % in Czech Republic, in the weight group 1 001-1 500 g the incidence in Slovakia
is 9.7 %, while in the Czech Republic only 2.7 %. In Slovakia psychomotor retardation in the weight group ≤ 1000 g
affected 11.3 % of children, while in the Czech Republic only 8.3 %, in the 1 001-1 500 g weight group is the incidence
of PMR 8.1 % in Slovakia, while in the Czech Republic only 3.8 %. The results of this analysis point to reserves in neonatal,
paediatric and also in perinatal care.
