Atrial fibrillation is a significant independent risk factor of acute ischemic brain stroke. The risk of development of acute ischemic brain stroke increases with the occurrence of further risk factors. Basic epidemiologic data, review of risk factors and possibilities of primary and secondary prevention of development and recurrence of AIBS in patients with AF are given in the _article. Results of our pilot epidemiological retrospective study, mentioned at the end, claim the need of bigger care of this problem. A high number of incorrectly treated patients with AF points out that interdisciplinary cooperation within inpatient and out-patient care is insufficient.
