The authors present an overview of the current evidence and management recommendations for evaluation and treatment of adults with acute ischemic stroke.The goal of these guidelines is to limit the morbidity and mortality associated with stroke. The guidelines support the concept of complex stroke systems of care. They detail aspects of stroke care from patient recognition, emergency medical services activation, transport, and triage, as well as management during the initial hours in the stroke unit. The guideline discusses early stroke evaluation and therapeutic strategies in general medical care, as well as specific interventions such as reperfusion strategies. The aim of the articleis to give the basic characteristics of the guideline and analyze what is unchanged, revised or new compared to the previous guideline. In several chapters authors discuss the possibilities of managment in the Slovak health care system.
