Hippocampus proprius, gyrus dentatus and subiculum consist primarily of a single type cells and related interneurons. Hippocampal formation neurons vulnerability to pathological processes depends on the cell type and the area where these cells are found. Precise histopathologic correlation with MRI in patients with cognitive impairment is unclear. Several authors compared only volume – quantitative MRI and histological parameters of the hippocampus. Other authors deal only with volume parameters of the hippocampal in correlation with cognitive impairment. Understanding the mechanism of pathological processes must be based on knowledge of cytoarchitectonic and laminar structure of the hippocampus. This work describes and defines the regions of the hippocampus and their boundaries in order to contribute to the neuroanatomical studies of the hippocampus.
