Objective: Transperineal implantation of radioactive seeds is one of the treatment modalities with curative intention in
localised prostate cancer. The method is highly effective and followed by low morbidity of the procedure.
Material and methods: Since November 2007 to October 2015 there were 705 patients with prostate cancer with brachytherapy
in Slovakia. Initial series of 157 patients with median follow-up over 5 years were evaluated with focus on
biochemical control and morbidity.
Results: Biochemical control in the whole group with median follow up 5.3 years (4.4-7.7 years) was 94.9% (all prostate
cancer risk groups). Morbidity of the procedure was substantially lower then published for the procedure in the present
European guidelines for prostate cancer treatment.
Conclusions: Initial series of patients treated with transperineal implantation of radioactive seeds for prostate cancer
in Slovakia confirmed highly effective treatment results and low morbidity of the procedure. In comparison with world
literature the results do not fall behind, but vice versa, at lower morbidity then published one, the method became an
appreciated standard method for treatment in localised prostate cancer in Slovakia.
