Introduction & Objectives: Surgery for cryptorchidism should be performed under the age of 18 months. Aim of the study
was an analysis of the age in which they underwent the operation for cryptorchidism at our department.
Material & Methods: A retrospective study includes 305 patients operated for cryptorchidism at our department in the
period since 2007 - 2014. We analysed the median age at time of surgery, we compared patient´s median age with unilateral
and severe bilateral cryptorchidism and a possible change of the median age of the patients during the reporting
period. We also evaluated the number of unilateral and bilateral orchidopexy, orchiectomy and the number of intraoperative
findings of anorchia. We searched the eventual occurrence of TIN in the removal of the testicles.
Results: In a group of 305 patients the median age at time of surgery was 65 months. In the case of unilateral cryptorchidism
(251 patients) the median age was 60 months. The median age of bilateral cryptorchidism (54 patients) was
70 months. In total, 227 orchidopexies were unilateral and 52 were bilateral, we realised 24 orchiectomies. In four cases
we found anorchia. The study did not reveal any difference in patient´s age at the time of the operation during each
year of the reporting period. Only 4 patients were operated before the age of 18 months.
Conclusions: Our results showed a significant delay in accepted time for surgical correction of cryptorchidism in our
patients. Therefore we initiated a close collaboration with primary paediatric care doctors to improve this situation in
a short time in future.
