Aim: The objective of this study is to analyze the short term outcomes of the Egydio’s procedure while using heterologous
materials-xenografts in the selected subset of patients with uniplanar and complex penile deformities with regard
to the Peyronie’s disease.
Material and methods: In total group of 51 patients as a xenograft was used; bovine pericard- Peri-Guard in 39 patients;
tissue sealant-TachoSil in 9 patients and collagen matrix-Surgimend in 3 cases. The average follow-up was 31 months
(12-57 months).
Results: The mean patient’s age was 51±9 years (range 28-63 years). Each patient had a finding of uniplanar (34 patients
/66.7%); biplanar deformity (17 patiens/33.3%), which compromised the sexual intercourse. The average duration
of graft implantation was (36, 41, and 9 minutes) respectively. Almost all patients reported subjective and objective
improvement of penile deformity (46 pts / 90.2%). In 3 pts persisting residual curvature was observed (<20°), which
did not lead to overall dissatisfaction. The average length of the penis (the stretched loose penis) preoperatively was
13.7 cm (10 – 16.5 cm) after surgery (9-12 months) was 15.3 cm (9.5 – 17.8 cm). Reduced glans sensivity was observed
in 11 patients (21.6%). The mean value of IIEF-5 score preoperatively and postoperatively was 17.0 (16.0-21.0) and 20.5
(20.0 – 23.0 – between 9-12 months after surgery). The incidence of de-novo erectile dysfunction was not noted in any
of our patients. Although in 11 patients (21.6%) reduced IIEF-5 scores (average of 3-4 points) were found.
Conclusion: Within a short postoperative follow-up period we have demonstrated comparable results with previous reports.
A critical step of the successful treatment of stable penile deformity is the appropriate timing and indication for
the determination of the type of surgical procedure. Satisfactory functional results can be achieved upon optimal patient’s
selection and preoperative guidance.
