N.meningitidis is a well-known cause of meningitis and rapidly fatal sepsis. N.meningitidis is not recognized as
a significant cause of urogenital infections. Orogenital sexual practice seemed to be the most likely route of transmission.
Meningococcal positive biological specimens from urogenital sites are unusual in Slovakia and have not
been described in medical, scientifical publications till now. In our national reference laboratory for meningococci,
we confirmed 5 meningococcal urogenital strains in the years 2016 – 2018. Two strains serogroup C were isolated
from urogenital specimens of young homosexual men.
Further, there were two meningococcal non-groupable strains and one strain serogroup B from the middle-aged
women. In three cases acute purulent urogenital diseases were confirmed. Two women were with an asymptomatic
infection. It is the first Slovak publication mentioned about pathogenic N.meningitidis isolated from the urogenital
tract, its medical importance and the latest knowledge associated with this issue.
