There was enormous increase of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) in last years. PCI is indicated for myocardial revascularization in both stable angina pectoris and acute coronary syndrome patients. Risk of restenosis represents most important problem during follow-up after successful simple angioplasty. Application of drugs has not shown benefit in restenosis redution after PCI. Some special interventional procedures (directional and rotational atherectomy, cutting ballon angioplasty, brachytherapy) in prevention of restenosis are limited for selected angiographic findings. Bare metal stents when compared with simple balloon angioplasty significantly reduce restenosis after PCI. Use of drug-eluting stents has further dramatically decreased angiographic and clinical restenosis rate.
